Hilleweg House, The Netherlands

For more than 30 years Kamermans Architects has designed Passive Solar Heated houses that largely heat and cool themselves. In cooler climates there will be a need for some additional heating, which is best done through a heated concrete floor slab. The low winter and high summer sun angles combined with wide eaves keep the slab warm in winter and cool in summer. That warmth, or coolness, is retained through high levels of insulation. Cross ventilation to opening windows at the highest point of the house provides natural ventilation for summer cooling and healthy indoor air. In winter the shutters at the internal balcony are kept closed to retain the solar and heater generated heat in the ground floor living areas.

The roof has integrated PV panels, earth heat for hot water (no gas), hydronic heating to the concrete floor, rainwater harvesting for rainwater harvesting for washing machines and toilet flushing.
