A compact, sloping site in a heritage area, surrounded by windows on neighbouring properties, presented a unique challenge for KA.
The Bell Road house sits discretely among the villas and bungalows, drawing from the existing typology in scale and finish. As you approach the entrance, the house presents as an understated, single storey facade, retaining privacy from the adjacent building by utilising high level windows. Moving around the site, the house extends down the bank revealing a two storey glazed elevation providing morning light into the bedrooms and living spaces and a view over the Portland Road valley.
The floating roof is a twisted pane which angles upwards at the north end, propped up by a glass facade, opening the living space to the sun. The client had a special childhood connection to southland silver beech, hence its use in the lining of the tongue and groove mono pitch ceiling and soffit. The joinery between the two is detailed to fall away, reinforcing the sculptural form of the roof. Silver beech is also referenced throughout the house in the custom cabinetry and furniture designed by KA.
